On any given day there is time that I will play with my kids in between my work from home. In the morning before I even crack open the computer we usually watch a cartoon or cooking show together. Even though this isn’t play in the traditional sense, it is something we do together and enjoy so I think it counts!
After lunch we will go outside and get away from electronics if it is a nice day out. Sometimes we will walk to the largest park in the state and watch the ducks swim around the pond. On the not so nice days we will play a video game or a board game just to shake the day up a bit.
My older kids like to partake in some arts and crafts or riding their plasma cars around my dining room table. My baby is still under 2 so she actually plays with me all day long. She toddles around the house and brings me every toy or item that she found interesting and we examine it together. The other day she brought me an alive chipmunk that the cats dragged up from the basement. That was a wake up call!
I love playing with my kids and being goofy. It makes me feel young again and I feel so close and engaged when we are playing together. Today we are going to try to do some cooking challenges. I basically allow them to raid the kitchen and make creations, within reason. They get these ideas from Youtube and sometimes we make videos of the process and their creations to post as well.
I know that my kids enjoy playing with each other but at the end of the day I really think they enjoy our playtime as well. They get a different kind of play with their daddy — activities like woodworking, painting, building bird houses and the like. Those are bigger projects that span over time but I treasure our moments everyday because I know at some point they will be gone.
